Belliss & Morcom Turbine — Emergency Babbitt Bearing Failure During Crushing Season
Scope of Work
Emergency site response, root-cause diagnosis, replacement babbitt bearing manufacture and fit, rotor inspection, and recommissioning within a 14-hour window.
The Challenge
The turbine tripped at 02:00 during peak crushing season due to a babbitt bearing collapse on the non-drive end. The mill was processing 8,000 TCD — every hour offline cost approximately ₹4 lakh in cane losses.
Our Solution
Our engineer was dispatched within 90 minutes of the call and reached site by 05:30. Root cause identified: oil starvation from a blocked oil way. Replacement bearing was sourced from workshop stock, rebabbitted and hand-scraped to fit on-site. Rotor journal inspected — no damage. Turbine back on line by 16:00.
Measured Outcomes
- Total downtime: 14 hours from trip to first steam
- Root cause identified and oil way cleaned — no repeat trip
- Estimated cane loss value prevented: approximately ₹56 lakh
- No damage to rotor journals — saved shaft replacement cost
