KKK Compressor-Gearbox-Motor Train — Precision Laser Alignment
Scope of Work
Precision laser alignment of a three-element compressor train (motor–gearbox–compressor) following gearbox replacement. Pipe strain measurement and correction.
The Challenge
The motor was a fixed-speed induction motor with limited shimming access. Pipe strain on the compressor discharge was pulling the casing by 0.04 mm — enough to invalidate the alignment once connected.
Our Solution
We performed an uncoupled cold alignment, then measured and documented pipe strain with the discharge line connected. The piping contractor re-supported the discharge spool and the pipe strain dropped to <0.005 mm. Final coupled alignment: angular 0.008 mm/100 mm, offset 0.012 mm — within OEM tolerances.
Measured Outcomes
- Angular misalignment: 0.008 mm/100 mm (OEM limit 0.02 mm/100 mm)
- Parallel offset: 0.012 mm (OEM limit 0.025 mm)
- Pipe strain corrected — no residual nozzle load on compressor
- Vibration at first start: 1.2 mm/s — well within alarm level
